Sports & Recreation

Our Sports & Recreation department has the following projects in progress:

Our Mission is to increase and enhance participation in sporting activities around London inner cities, and to increase and enhance the influence of sport in the wider society. We intend to achieve this mission in two ways

  • By using the power of sport to help tackle pressing social challenges through the local programme of sports-related community development initiatives – ‘Sports for Good’ initiatives; and
  • By recognising and celebrating sporting excellence at the Annual Nida Trust Sports Conference.

In all our work, we will uphold and promote free, fair and equal opportunities for all, because we believe sport can bring communities together.

Our aims are:

  • To aid and enhance the development of sport around the London inner cities, through the development of various sporting programmes – ‘Sports for Good’ initiatives.
  • To promote participation of young people in sports across the London inner cities, regardless of gender, ethnic background, financial means or physical or mental disability.
  • To champion sport as a healthy and constructive pursuit for everyone.
  • To promote sport as a means for social interaction and understanding, and calling communities together through shared social and sporting values.
  • To support and promote good sportsmanship, teamwork and build self-confidence in the youth of today through sport.
  • To recognise and celebrate outstanding sporting achievement through the annual Sports Conference.

We will focus on three main areas:

  • Training & Development – It is essential that our youth develop physically at a steady rate. We have introduced academies & courses to ensure that the physical development of our children is continuous.
  • Participation – The Trust runs competitions in different sports so that our youth get the chance to participate at a competitive level.
  • Awareness – We realize that some communities do not encourage proactive participation from their children in the field of different sports. The Trust intends to break these barriers by organising annual conferences on sports & recreation so that these communities get the chance to enjoy the significance of taking part in sports.
We hope that by people taking part in various sports, they will be encouraged to develop as individuals, thereby contributing more actively to our society.

Academies

Nida Trust will aim to set up academies in different areas to cater for the sporting needs of various communities. Our academies will focus on these two sports (we will expand this subject to funding):

  • Football
  • Cricket

We will register young people with age 7 – 19years old from all communities, particularly the BME communities. The main aims of these academies are:

  • To enable young people to become more active
  • To promote social cohesion thorough sport
  • To motivate young people to achieve excellence in sport
  • To prevent young from engaging in anti – social influences/behavior
  • To make young people realise the significance of working together to achieve a common goal

Courses

We, at Nida Trust believe that it is essential to regenerate skilled people in order to ensure sustainability. To do that, we will encourage young people from the different communities, particularly the BME communities to attend courses on the following topics:

  • First Aid
  • Coaching courses
  • Youth Leadership course
  • Refereeing courses

We hope, the above courses will enable young people to develop relevant skill and knowledge for them to progress further and at the same time contribute more to their respective community.

Tours

To promote sport amongst young people, Nida Trust will organise tours to different sporting venues and institutions to give the young youngsters the opportunity to see and experience how these multi – million pounds organisations operate. The main purpose of these tours is to educate the young people that there is more to sport than just playing a game. These tours will expose the young people to the following;

  • They will see how these organisations promote themselves to their target audience
  • How they raise funds
  • How they work with the local communities
  • How they manage their finances

Competitions

Nida Trust will hold competitions in football and cricket to promote teamwork, competition, excellence, respect, tolerance and social cohesion. These competitions are opened to young people from 11 – 17years of age. Furthermore, these competitions will help to promote and create an awareness of the importance of participating in sporting activities, particularly within the BME communities.

Seminars

To promote the importance of taking up sports to improve the health and social well – being, Nida Trust will undertake a range of services to encourage those communities that are hard to reach. Seminars will be offered in state and independent schools, community and faith centres.

Annual conference

To give a national focus, Nida Trust will organise conferences to deal with sports and how it can relate to the wider society
